What are Essential Oils?

So what are essential oils? I’m sure you have heard about essential oils by now. They are gaining popularity by the day! But, what exactly are essential oils, where does it come from, and why does it matter? I know these are questions I have asked myself plenty of times, so here is a brief crash course in oils!

In short, Essential Oils can be described as the lifeblood of the plant. Each shrub, flower, tree, root, bush, or seed has its own unique compound to preserve itself. Take an aloe plant for example, when you break off one of its leaves and plant it separately it will grow into a new aloe plant! Trees will heal themselves with time. When you think of essential oils, think about taking the essence of the plant itself-the lifeblood!

People have been using different plants for health benefits since the beginning of time. There is mention of oils in the bible, and the use of herbs is well documented. The benefit to essential oils is how concentrated they are! Herbs are very weak in comparison. Essential oils are obtained through a distillation or cold press process that requires tons of plant material resulting in small amounts of concentrated oils.

So we know that essential oils are the lifeblood of the plant and that we obtain them by a distillation process, but why does it matter? Simply put it’s a natural proven method of supporting our health, emotional support, and can be used to replace many common household items with a more natural alternative. As a bonus they smell amazing!

I personally use essential oils everyday for health reasons, to clean, to keep my crazy emotions in check, and because I am obsessed with a clean good-smelling house!

Be warned! Not all oils are created equally. The oils you see for $5 at convenience stores may be synthetic, mixed with chemicals or additives, and diluted so that it only contains a small percentage of the actual oil. AKA not effective and potentially harmful. That’s why I trust and choose Young Living. They are the only company that are openly honest about where the oils come from, how they are made, and the exact ingredients in the bottle. This open honesty is what Young living calls their “Seed to Seal” promise. You can read more about Seed to Seal here:
